Sprint said today that it will carry the latest Android phone, the Samsung Epic. Beleaguered Sprint has been taking a dual-pronged approach to stemming the flood of subscribers lost over the past few years by betting heavily on Android and its WiMAX fourth-generation wireless network. But can the launch of more 4G Android handsets in the next few months win it enough subscribers before Verizon’s Droid line-up gets access to the coming Verizon 4G network?

Sprint has jumped firmly on the Android train, starting with the HTC Hero smartphone last year and more recently, the EVO 4G. The EVO 4G quickly became the darling of the Android world given its impressive hardware specs and the ability to tap into Sprint’s other weapon — the WiMAX network. The EVO sold out at Sprint stores throughout the U.S. as soon as it was available, but the carrier is not content to rest on that success.

The Epic 4G is Samsung’s latest member of the Galaxy S product line, and the first Samsung phone to gain WiMAX capability. It’s a 4-inch Android phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and should go head-to-head with Verizon’s Droid line of Android phones. Sprint is pushing its 4G network with both the EVO and the Epic, as Verizon’s nex- generation network is not yet up and running for consumers — and won’t have handsets until next year at the earliest. However, the advantage Sprint enjoys having an active 4G network will not last long, as Verizon has concluded technical trials of its upcoming LTE network and will be expanding it to test markets shortly.

If it seems Sprint is pushing 4G Android phones a bit desperately, it’s with good reason. The company has not shared the number of subscribers gained with the EVO 4G launch, but given the strong sales numbers the phone is already a good performer. Sprint attributes some of that success to the availability of 4G, and expects that to continue with the Samsung Epic 4G. Verizon has indicated its LTE network will be coming online this year, covering 100 million people, so Sprint knows its advantage is short-lived even though it has a healthy head start. Sprint’s 4G network (powered by Clearwire) already reaches 44 million potential subscribers, with 120 million by the end of this year.

It will realistically be well into next year before Verizon can reach enough subscribers to make a serious run at Sprint’s 4G, but that doesn’t give Sprint a very big window of opportunity. The gap is narrowing, and will close altogether far too quickly. Sprint better get as many subscribers as possible tied down to data contracts over the next few months, to counter the coming Verizon Droid army.

If you’re still on the fence whether to opt for Verizon’s Droid X or instead go 4G with the EVO on Sprint, you may want to spend a few minutes perusing the Droid X’s leaked manual. It shows in detail the tweaked UI, on-screen keyboard with Swype, and even gives tips to extending the battery’s life. There doesn’t seem to be anything that surprising within, though, but totally worth your time if this might be your next phone. [AlienBabel via BGR]

Oh, you thought Verizon would let AT&T , Sprint, and T-Mobile all nab their own variants of the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S without them getting one too?

Not a chance.

The specs are in line with all of the rest of the variant’s: 1 GHZ CPU, 5 Megapixel camera (with LED flash and HD video recording), Android 2.1, and the works like Bluetooth and WiFi all jammed behind 4″ Super AMOLED display. Alas, unlike Sprint’s Samsung Epic, there’s no physical QWERTY keyboard – but that aside, it’s still one killer piece of kit.

Note: There’s no picture of Verizon’s variant available yet, so the handset shown above is the standard Galaxy S.

Remember the Galaxy Pro? It popped up around the rumor mill almost immediately after the Galaxy S was announced, and was supposedly a nearly identical phone, with one major difference: a big ol’ full QWERTY physical keyboard.

It disappeared for some time after its first leak, only to make another appearance last week. And now.. it’s real. It’s oh, oh-so-real.

Samsung and Sprint just pulled back the curtains minutes ago. They’re not spilling the beans on price or a launch date just yet, but the specs are enough to keep me patient:

  • WiMax support, making this the second phone to support Sprint’s 4G network
  • Android 2.1
  • Two cameras: One 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and HD video recording on the back, and a VGA camera on the front.
  • 1Ghz Cortex A8 “Hummingbird” CPU
  • Mobile hotspot support for up to 5 devices
  • WiFi b/g/n
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • 4.0″ inch Super AMOLED display

Oh, and of course, that monstrous (and I mean that in the best sense) QWERTY keyboard.

Look out, EVO 4G.

The Samsung Epic 4G joins the HTC Evo as Sprint’s 4G handsets, but diverges with the fact that it has a slide-out keyboard. It looks like the Galaxy S Pro, which we’ve been hearing about leaked in the past few weeks. More »

Yesterday we talked about how the HTC EVO 4G will be updated in the following days and might get Android 2.2 Froyo a lot sooner than anticipated. Today we have some bad news for other Sprint Android customers that happen to own either an HTC Hero or a Samsung Moment. These two devices will not make the Froyo jump and that means youll only be able to enjoy clair on them.Sprint announced officially even though only through a Twitter message that neither of them will get the Android

Are you toting a Sprint HTC Hero or Samsung Moment? You might wanna take a seat — and while you’re at it, have the ol’ Sad Trombone at the ready.

Sprint has positively confirmed that neither of these phones will be updated to Android 2.2 (fire Sad Trombone now!). That means no drastic speed improvements as provided by the new compiler, no built-in Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, and no Flash. Well, unless you root your device and install Android 2.2 without Sprint’s guiding hand. Not that we’d ever tell you to do that. We’re just saying, you know, you should could.

On the upside, the EVO 4G will be getting 2.2 — but really, was there any doubt about that?

Google may’ve let Froyo out of the bag, but until the networks and manufacturers release it that won’t mean anything to those ready to kick Android 2.1 to the curb. Sprint and Motorola’s (rough/unconfirmed) plans are detailed below. More »

A Sprint source has leaked to BGR that the HTC Evo will mostly likely be getting a software update on June 28th. The update would bring improved Wi-Fi (802.11n, we’re guessing), fix Exchange issues and repair a battery-draining problem with the official Facebook app. Why Sprint continues to have their Nascar app run in the background of all Evos at all times, we still don’t know. We assumed the leaked Galaxy S Pro would have Samsung’s Super AMOLED screens, but thankfully one of AndroidCentral‘s tipsters has gone the whole hog and blabbed the specs of what’s thought to be Sprint’s second 4G phone. More »
